BCBA Supervision CEU Requirement 2026: How Many Do You Need?

By Karen Chung Published: June 16, 2026 Last Reviewed: June 2026 6 min read

BCBAs who provide supervision face a specific continuing education sub-requirement beyond the general 32 CEU total. Understanding exactly how many supervision CEUs you need — and what qualifies — is essential for a smooth BACB renewal.

Direct Answer
3 Supervision CEUs
BCBAs who provide BACB supervision must complete 3 supervision CEUs per 2-year BACB renewal cycle. These 3 CEUs count within (not in addition to) your required 32 CEU total. Source: BACB.com

The Complete BCBA CEU Breakdown Including Supervision

CEU TypeRequired AmountWho Must Complete
Ethics CEUs (BACB Ethics Code content)4 CEUsAll BCBAs
Supervision CEUs (BACB supervision standards)3 CEUsBCBAs who provide BACB supervision
Unrestricted CEUs (any BACB-eligible topic)25 CEUsAll BCBAs (fills remaining hours)
TOTAL: 32 CEUs per 2-year renewal cycle — supervision CEUs count within this total, not on top of it
Key Point: Supervision CEUs Are Included in the 32 Total A common point of confusion: the 3 supervision CEUs are not in addition to your 32 CEUs. They are part of your 32. If you provide supervision, your breakdown is 4 ethics + 3 supervision + 25 unrestricted = 32 total.

Who Must Complete Supervision CEUs?

The 3 supervision CEU requirement applies to BCBAs who provide BACB supervision during their renewal cycle. This includes:

BCBAs who do not provide any BACB supervision during their renewal cycle are not required to complete supervision CEUs. However, the BACB recommends staying current with supervision standards as a matter of professional practice — and if your responsibilities change mid-cycle, you may become required to complete them.

If You Begin Supervising Mid-Cycle If you begin providing BACB supervision partway through your renewal cycle, consult the BACB directly for guidance on whether supervision CEUs are required for that cycle. Do not assume the requirement doesn't apply — verify with the BACB.

What Must Supervision CEU Courses Cover?

Supervision CEUs must be completed through a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider and must address BACB supervision standards. Qualifying supervision CEU content includes:

Generic management or leadership training, even if from an ACE provider, may not satisfy the supervision CEU requirement if it does not specifically address BACB supervision standards. Verify with the provider that a course is categorized as supervision content before purchasing.

How to Complete Your Supervision CEUs: Step-by-Step

Not sure how many you have left? Track your supervision CEUs against your renewal date — free, no account.

Confirm you are required to complete supervision CEUs

If you supervise RBTs, BCaBAs, or BCBA candidates during your renewal cycle, the 3 supervision CEU requirement applies to you. If not, supervision CEUs are optional but recommended.

Select a BACB ACE provider with supervision-specific courses

Verify provider ACE status at BACB.com. Confirm the course is specifically categorized as supervision content, not just general professional development.

Complete 3 supervision CEUs early in your renewal cycle

Target your first 6 months. One comprehensive supervision course may cover all 3 CEUs; or combine shorter modules. Post-July 2026, verify self-paced courses monitor participation — the handbook's example measure is at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU, or another form of required active responding.

Log completions immediately in the BACB Gateway

Enter each completed CEU in the BACB Gateway right after completion. Don't accumulate certificates to enter later — if a provider fails to report, your records are your backup.

Before renewal: verify your log shows 3 supervision + 4 ethics + 25 unrestricted = 32

Review your BACB Gateway log at least 60 days before your renewal deadline. Correct any missing entries before submitting renewal.

The July 2026 Participation-Monitoring Change

As of July 1, 2026, the BACB's ACE Provider standard requires participation monitoring on self-paced (asynchronous) CE, including self-paced supervision CEUs — the handbook's example measure is at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU, or another form of required active responding. The change is structural: it governs how a self-paced course is built, not which formats are allowed. Self-study courses remain eligible as long as they monitor participation.

When selecting self-paced supervision CEU courses after July 1, 2026, confirm the course monitors participation — for example, that it has knowledge checks built in — before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many supervision CEUs does a BCBA need?

BCBAs who provide BACB supervision must complete 3 supervision CEUs per 2-year BACB certification renewal cycle. These 3 CEUs count within (not in addition to) the required 32 CEU total.

Do BCBA supervision CEUs count toward the 32 CEU total?

Yes. The 3 supervision CEUs are part of your 32 total, not extra. Full breakdown: 4 ethics CEUs + 3 supervision CEUs + 25 unrestricted CEUs = 32 total CEUs required per 2-year cycle.

Who is required to complete BCBA supervision CEUs?

BCBAs who provide BACB supervision are required. This includes supervising RBTs, BCaBAs, and BCBA candidates. BCBAs who provide no BACB supervision during their renewal cycle are not required to complete supervision CEUs.

What content must BCBA supervision CEU courses cover?

Supervision CEU courses must cover BACB supervision standards: structured meeting requirements, supervisor responsibilities, documentation requirements, and supervision-related ethical obligations. Courses must be from a BACB ACE provider and be specifically categorized as supervision content.

Are supervision CEUs the same as ethics CEUs?

No. They are separate required subtypes. BCBAs who supervise need 4 ethics CEUs AND 3 supervision CEUs — both count toward 32, but they fulfill different sub-requirements and cannot substitute for each other.

When should a BCBA complete their supervision CEUs?

Early in your renewal cycle — ideally in the first 6 months. Required-subtype courses (ethics and supervision) have limited availability; completing them early ensures you're covered regardless of what comes up later.
