BCBA CEU Requirements 2026–2027: How to Plan and Track Your 32 CEUs

The short answer: a BCBA needs 32 CEUs in each 2-year recertification cycle, and 4 of them must be in ethics. For BCBAs who supervised RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the recertification cycle, the supervision requirement is 3 CEUs through December 31, 2026 and 4 CEUs beginning January 1, 2027. Today that leaves 25 CEUs for any behavior-analytic topic if you supervise, and 28 if you don't. The BACB hasn't said which supervision number applies to a cycle that runs across January 1, 2027. Without a clear plan, most BCBAs find themselves scrambling in the final months of their renewal cycle to make up missing hours in the right categories.

What BCBAs Need for Renewal: The 32 CEU Requirement

Every BCBA must complete 32 continuing education units (CEUs) within their 2-year BACB renewal cycle. Of those 32, the BACB requires specific subtypes that must come from BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers.

Important: most BCBAs earn their CEUs at events run by BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers, but that is not the only route. The BACB Handbook also counts qualifying behavior-analytic graduate coursework, teaching, and publishing in a peer-reviewed journal. A general CE course that is none of these does not count.

The 4 Required CEU Types Explained

1. Ethics CEUs (4 required)

Four of your 32 CEUs must be ethics CEUs. The BACB defines an ethics CE event as one about the BACB's ethics requirements, or about cultural and contextual responsiveness in behavior-analytic practice, and most of the event has to be on that topic. A general professional ethics or psychology ethics course that only mentions the BACB's standards in passing does not qualify.

Ethics CEUs are available in many formats: multi-hour comprehensive ethics courses (which fulfill the entire 4-CEU requirement in one go) or shorter modules that you combine to reach 4 hours. Ethics courses count toward your 32 CEU total.

2. Supervision CEUs (3 required for supervisors)

If you provide BACB supervision — supervising RBTs, BCaBAs, or candidates — you must complete 3 supervision CEUs per renewal cycle. These courses must cover BACB supervision standards, the roles and responsibilities of supervisors, and effective supervision practices.

The 3 supervision CEUs count within your 32 CEU total. BCBAs who do not provide any BACB supervision are not required to complete supervision CEUs, though it is still recommended for professional development. What changes in 2027: for BCBAs who supervised RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the recertification cycle, the supervision requirement is 3 CEUs through December 31, 2026 and 4 CEUs beginning January 1, 2027. The total stays at 32. The BACB has not said which number governs a cycle that runs across that date. Our advice, not the BACB's rule: if you supervise and your cycle runs across that date, plan for 4. One spare CEU costs far less than a lapsed certification.

3. Unrestricted CEUs (fills remaining hours)

The remaining 25 CEUs while the supervision requirement is 3 (28 if you did not supervise anyone during the cycle) can be in any BACB-eligible content area — behavior analytic content, autism intervention, organizational behavior management, research methods, and more. These "unrestricted" CEUs are not limited to a specific topic, but they still have to be earned in one of the ways the BACB counts.

4. The July 2026 Participation-Monitoring Change (self-paced CE)

Effective July 1, 2026, self-paced (asynchronous) CE must monitor participation — the handbook's example measure is at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU, or another form of required active responding. The change is about how a self-paced course is built — it does not disqualify any particular format. Recorded courses and self-study remain eligible as long as they monitor participation.

When selecting courses after July 1, 2026, confirm with the ACE provider that their courses meet this requirement before purchasing.

How to Plan Your CEUs Across Two Years

The biggest mistake BCBAs make is treating CEU completion as a year-2 problem. With 32 CEUs required over 24 months, the math is simple: complete roughly 16 CEUs per year, or about 1–2 CEUs per month. This pace is easily achievable and eliminates end-of-cycle panic.

The Three-Phase Planning Framework

Phase 1 — First 6 Months: Lock in Required Subtypes Early

Complete your ethics and supervision CEUs in the first six months of your cycle, not the last. Why: these are the hardest to fulfill at the last minute (limited scheduling availability in required-topic courses), and completing them early confirms your required subtypes are covered regardless of what else comes up.

• Complete 4 ethics CEUs — one comprehensive ethics course handles this
• Complete 3 supervision CEUs (if you provide supervision)
• Add 5–8 unrestricted CEUs from topics relevant to your current caseload
• Target: 12–15 CEUs in first 6 months

Phase 2 — Months 7–18: Unrestricted CEUs at Your Pace

With required subtypes covered, the remaining 17–20 unrestricted CEUs can be completed at a steady pace of 1–2 per month. Choose topics that align with your professional development goals, client population, or areas where you want to deepen expertise.

• Select 1–2 CEU courses per month on topics of your choice
• Log completions immediately in the BACB Gateway — do not save receipts to enter later
• Target: complete 25–28 total CEUs by end of month 18

Phase 3 — Final 6 Months: Verify and Complete

By month 18 you should need only 4–7 CEUs to reach 32. Use this phase to verify your BACB Gateway log is accurate, complete any remaining courses, and submit renewal well before your deadline.

• Review BACB Gateway: confirm ethics = 4, supervision = 3, total ≥ 32
• Complete remaining CEUs with at least 60 days before renewal deadline
• Submit renewal as soon as requirements are met — do not wait until the deadline
• Target: all 32 CEUs logged and verified by month 22

Avoiding Common CEU Mistakes

• Using non-ACE providers: A CE event counts only if its provider holds active BACB ACE status. Verify status at BACB.com before purchase.
• Leaving ethics for last: Ethics-specific courses have limited availability. Complete early in your cycle.
