Special Learning, Inc. Partners with Integrated Montessori Center in the Philippines to Provide Assessment Services to Children Affected by Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities

(PRWEB) February 20, 2013

Special Learning, Inc., the leading global provider of comprehensive solutions and educational resources for the autism community, announced today that it has partnered with a large Montessori school system, Integrated Montessori Center located in the Philippines, to provide comprehensive assessment services for those affected by autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities from February 27 through March 7 in Manila.

Through the joint program, Special Learning, a U.S.-based autism services provider and training resource is sending a team of board certified behavioral analysts to the Philippines to implement an assessment program designed for early detection and proper diagnosis of autism.

The assessment program is open to children from age 2 to young adolescents. Special Learning is providing this service in partnership with Step By Step, Inc., a nonprofit autism treatment center located in Midwestern United States. Clinicians will conduct Western-based assessment services in Manila, where it is difficult to get access to qualified professionals to properly assess the skills level of individuals and provide accurate diagnoses of autism.

During the visit, Special Learning expects to conduct assessments for about 50 children during the two-week clinic, according to Karen Chung, founder and chief executive officer of Special Learning

“There’s a clear need for the types of services Special Learning can offer to underserved children affected by autism and other developmental disabilities in places such as the Philippines,” Chung said. “Through these initial assessments, we’ll be able to better determine the level of need prior to our expansion there in the coming months.”

Special Learning and Integrated Montessori Center are currently in the process of finalizing a long-term program that will bring special education classrooms to the school, as well as one-to-one intensive behavioral intervention using the methods of applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy.

The collaboration marks Special Learning’s first significant venture outside the U.S. in making quality autism solutions available around the globe, especially in areas of the world where services are insufficient or lacking.

There are more than 21 million students in the Philippines and an estimated 13 percent of those have special needs. Out of these individuals only about 500,000 are properly diagnosed, and many are left not knowing what their real disorders are, let alone what treatment options are available.

“One of the main obstacles in getting a diagnosis in the Philippines is the lack of professionals that are qualified to conduct an accurate and comprehensive assessment of a child’s real developmental status,” said Chung. “It takes months to sometimes years to get an appointment with a developmental pediatrician, and even then, a treatment plan is not always provided. Precious time is wasted, which could have been used to start a therapy program, giving a child a better chance to have an improved quality of life.”

In recognizing this deficiency, Integrated Montessori Center and Special Learning were prompted to establish this short-term program to deliver assessment services for ASD, from which they will develop a comprehensive treatment program to support the diagnosis.

Assessments are 90 to 120 minutes and will include evaluations of:

    Autistic symptoms

    Adaptive behavior

    Early development

    Medical status

    Academic and problem solving skills

    Problematic behaviors

    Language skills

The cost of assessments will be $115, or 4,500 pesos. They will be conducted on the fourth floor of the 4th Floor Integrated Montessori, Burbank Tower, California Garden Square, Libertad St., Mandaluyong City.
