RBT Exam Prep: How to Pass on Your First Try

The RBT exam is your final step to certification. It is 85 questions, 90 minutes, at a Pearson VUE testing center. In 2025, 75% of first-time candidates passed (BACB data), so most people who prepare well pass on the first attempt.

This guide covers what to expect, how to study by domain, strategies for multiple-choice questions, and what to do on test day.

Since 1 January 2026 the exam is built on the 3rd edition of the BACB's RBT Test Content Outline. "Test Content Outline" is the current term. "Task List" is the older name for the same document. What the 3rd edition changed. Its six areas are Data Collection and Graphing; Behavior Assessment; Behavior Acquisition; Behavior Reduction; Documentation and Reporting; and Ethics.

Study Strategies That Work

Domain-by-Domain Study Tips

A. Data Collection and Graphing (13 questions)

• Know continuous measurement (frequency, duration, latency, interresponse time) and discontinuous measurement (partial interval, whole interval, momentary time sampling), plus permanent product recording, and how to run each one
• Practice entering data and updating graphs, turning raw data into rate, mean duration and percentage, and spotting the trend in a graph
• Describe a behavior in terms two people could observe and count the same way
• Know the risks that come with unreliable data collection and poor procedural fidelity

B. Behavior Assessment (8 questions)

• Know the three preference assessments by name (multiple stimulus, paired stimulus, free operant) and how each one runs
• Know the skills assessments you'll take part in (curriculum-based, developmental, social skills)
• Know the parts of functional assessment you may take part in, and the difference between a descriptive assessment and a functional analysis

C. Behavior Acquisition (19 questions)

• This is the largest domain, so give it the most time. Know positive and negative reinforcement, schedules of reinforcement, conditioned reinforcers, and how to deliver reinforcement immediately and contingently
• Know discrete-trial teaching and naturalistic teaching (incidental teaching, natural environment training)
• Know chaining (forward, backward, total task), shaping, discrimination training and token economies
• Know prompts and how to fade them (errorless, least-to-most, stimulus fading, time delay), the difference between maintenance and acquisition, and how to teach for generalization across settings, people and stimuli

D. Behavior Reduction (14 questions)

• Know the common functions of behavior
• Know antecedent interventions (NCR, high-probability request sequences, demand fading) and differential reinforcement (DRO, DRA, DRI, DRL, FCT)
• Know extinction and its secondary effects (extinction burst, response variation, resurgence, emotional responding), and the side effects of punishment (emotional responses, escape and avoidance)
• Know positive and negative punishment (for example, time-out) and that you use them only when your behavior plan includes them, and your role in crisis and emergency procedures

E. Documentation and Reporting (10 questions)

• Write what happened in a session objectively, following the legal, regulatory and workplace requirements that apply
• Know what to report to your supervisor promptly: concerns from caregivers, teachers or other providers, and anything that might affect progress, such as illness, medication or a schedule change
• Know when to ask your supervisor for direction (training needs, data that looks wrong) and how to follow the chain of command

F. Ethics (11 questions)

• Know the core principles of the BACB's ethics code for RBTs: benefit others; treat others with compassion, dignity and respect; behave with integrity; and ensure your own competence
• Know that you provide services only once you've shown competence, and only under ongoing supervision from a supervisor who meets BACB requirements, and what effective supervision looks like (instruction, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, observation)
• Know the rules on confidential information, public statements and social media, gifts, and multiple relationships, including how to reduce the risk when a multiple relationship can't be avoided
• Know the professional skills the outline names (accepting feedback, listening actively, seeking input, collaborating) and what cultural humility asks of you, starting with your own biases

Test Day: What to Expect

1. Arrive 30 minutes early. You need to check in, store personal items, and get settled.
2. Bring two forms of ID. One must be a government-issued photo ID. The other can be any ID with your name and signature.
3. No personal items in the testing room. Your phone, watch, notes, and bags are stored in a locker. You receive a dry-erase board or scratch paper.
4. Pace yourself. You have about 63 seconds per question. If a question stumps you, flag it and move on. Come back to flagged questions at the end.
5. Read every answer choice. The exam includes distractor answers that look correct at first glance. Read all options before selecting.
6. Do not second-guess. Your first instinct is usually correct unless you realize you misread the question. Change answers only if you have a clear reason.
7. Results in 24 to 48 hours. You will receive an email from the BACB with your pass/fail result. If you pass, your RBT certification is processed within a few weeks.
