Amanda’s Journey to Recovery (Susie's Diary) Blog #3

It's been an interesting few weeks. I am so proud of my little girl for how far she has come in the last month. Her therapist comes over and she goes right over to her puzzles, shape sorters, blocks etc and is ready to start her day. She has really connected with her therapist and even when she says it's time for a break she is still working hard. She knows how to keep her engaged at the same time as teaching her different skills which I think is what we were lacking with some of the boys therapists years ago. They didn't have the experience in knowing how to balance working with rewards that worked for them and making it fun in the whole process. I am so glad we have someone who is a great fit for us and our family too.

It's been a little challenging lately with the boys. I think my oldest seems to be doing quite well but I am a little worried about my 6 year old. He has been showing some new behaviors both at school and at home. I think he is probably overwhelmed with changing schools and routines and is testing all of us. Hoping that the home therapy starts soon so maybe they can give me some additional tips on the home stuff. I know my daughters therapist has been trying to give me some ideas and has helped us with a picture schedule to help with transitions between home and school and back so that he knows our expectations. I got called into school the other day about him and how it's going to be hard to add new programs to work on because his compliance is a challenge. I guess at least it's not just me that is having the problem. I was starting to wonder.

Everything has been a little crazy around here having some family issues on top of having 3 kids with autism is very hard. I just found out my mom who has been my top supporter in understanding and helping anything I need for the kids has lung cancer. It's so hard to find people who can try to understand your feelings about what you have going on in your life and then to have that hanging in the balance is not something I am prepared to handle.

Hopefully the next couple weeks will go smoothly now that we are entering holiday seasons. It's getting to be harder and harder taking all 3 kids places worried about them running or throwing a tantrum sometimes it's just easier to stay home! Hopefully if we can get some better communication going with the kids they can tell us better what they need or if they are feeling upset and why. Maybe that way we can better handle things. The other day at school a child shattered my sons 8,000 speech device. That kind of made my son upset changing his communication from a speech device he has had for 4 years to using PECS again. Working on trying to get that replaced and paid for has been a big stressor to me too because last time we tried to get approved for a speech device it took us a year and a state hearing with an attorney etc and I am hoping this isn't a going to be an issue with insurance. One step ahead several steps behind. Hoping to get back on track soon!
